Winter sports resort

Although Romania offers a multitude of touristic attractions, such as The Danube Delta (biosphere reservation of global interest) or the monasteries form the North of Moldavia (included in the UNESCO patrimony), many of the Romanian and foreign tourists prefer the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, also known as the Romanian Alps. With an extremely rich fauna and flora , one can find many natural reservations and national parks in the Carpathians, which host and protect rare species or on the verge of extinction: the lynx, the Carpathian stag, the bison and others. The numerous recreation and treatment resorts (of which many are open throughout the year), the mineral and thermal water springs, the unpolluted air, accessibility, as well as a good infrastructure represent a few reasons in favour of choosing the Romanian Carpathians as a future holiday destination.

Vatra Dornei

Situated in the northern part of the country at the crossing of Moldavia and Transilvania, and it is known because of the mineral and carbonated springs even since the beginning of the 19th century. The Rarau, Giumalau, Calimani Mountains, with numerous mountain (winter or summer) tracks, are a major attraction for tourists. It has several comfortable hotels and villas, and cable transportation installation.

Borsa

The most important resort in Maramures, Borsa is situated in the Rodnei Mountains at 860 m altitude. Surrounded by secular forests, the resort benefits from a climate which is favourable to the treatment of several affections, especially neuroses. It is open throughout the year and there are comfortable accommodation places in hotels and cabins. Trips can be organised to the Puzdrele cabin, the natural reservation Pietrosul Mare or to Valea Izei, famous for the beauty of the gates and wooden churches.

Paltinis

Situated in the Cindrelului Mountains of the Meridional Carpathians, not far from Sibiu. It is situated at the highest altitude in the country, 1442 m, and goes back in time in the 19th century. Many accommodation spaces in hotels and villas, ski tracks provided with cable transportation systems, restaurants, bars and commercial spaces. The Brukental Museum in Sibiu and the museum of the glass icons in Sibiel represent only a small part of this area’s attractions.

Durau

The resort is situated in the northern part of the Carpathians at 800 m altitude and has comfortable hotels and villas. The main touristic attractions are the Duruitoarea falls, very close to the resort, and a small church painted by N. Tonitza, one of the biggest Romanian painters. Short trips can be organised starting from the resort to the cabins Dochia, Izvorul Muresului and Fintinele.

Azuga

Situated at 15 km North distance from Busteni, it is a resort known as early as the 12th century, especially because of the springs rich in minerals. Azuga offers excellent facilities for skiing on a modern track recently provided with lighting installation.

Busteni

Situated on the same Prahova Valley as Predeal or Sinaia, at 880 metres altitude, it is the main access gate towards the touristic and alpine tracks in the Bucegi Mountains. The Sphinx and the Babele (Old Women), true natural monuments created by erosion of the rocks during time by wind and rain, together with the Cross of Heroes (49 metres high, innaugurated in 1927 on the Caraiman peak in honour of the Romanian heroes dead during World War I) represent the most important attractions of the resort.

Sinaia

Situated on the Prahova Valley at the foot of the Furnica and Piatra Arsa Mountains, at 800 metres altitude, Sinaia is known as a touristic resort ever since 1860 when King Carol I established his summer residence here.

Predeal

Situated at over 1,000 metres altitude, at only 147 kilometres North from Bucharest, Predeal offers a large range of accommodation possibilities in hotels (classified from one to three stars: Orizont, Brazi, Predeal, Carmen), villas, cabins (Girbova, Susai, Clabucet) and camping. Skiing lovers can practice it on one of the 15 tracks provided with cable transportation systems and operated by qualified monitors, most of which speak English, French or German.

Nightlife is intense. Predeal has many restaurants (some with popular / folk program), bars, discotheques and gambling rooms.

Poiana Brasov

Called “Clearing of the Sun”, it is situated 13 km from Brasov and 2.5 hours’ driving North from Bucharest on National Road no 1/
