Description: They distinguish among other mountains through massiveness, high altitudes and diversity of the relief elements, namely the glacial relief (ridges, cirques and lakes) and more gentle landforms of the karst relief. The first Romanian National Park was founded here, being the place with the most beautiful glacial lakes. Bucura is the biggest glacial lake, with a surface around 11 ha, following Zanoaga 9.5 ha, Taul Negru 7.5 ha, and Galesul 4.5 ha. But what makes Retezat Mountains really special is the look: under the direct action of the winds and the variations of the temperature the compact rocks brake into smaller pieces, creating a chaotic conglomerate.

The flora and the fauna are here very diverse, rich and protected inside the National Park (around 10.000 ha). Among the vegetal rarities there are here mountain orchids, edelweisses, wild nut trees, pine trees. The fauna is represented here by chamoises, deers, bears, capercaillies, lamb vultures, and in the lakes or rivers, trouts.

Location: They are part of the Southern Carpathians and border in the north with Hategului Depression, in south with Godeanu and Valcan Mountains, in east Tarcu Mountains, and in west Parang Mountains.

Highlights: Varful Peleaga - Peleaga Peak 2.509 m; Varful Papusa - Doll's Peak 2.508; Varful Retezat - Cuted Peak 2.484 m; Custura Papusii - Doll's Stony Ridge; Portile inchise - Closed Gates; Cheile Butii - Butii Gorges; Lacul Bucura - Bucura glacial Lake; Lacul Zanoaga - Zanoaga glacial Lake.
