Description: The so-called Romanian Alps, these mountains represent an enormous stone wall, stretching over more than 70 km from east to west. They exhibit numerous high summits at over 2.400 m, with vertical deep hollows towards north and moderate long ridges towards south. They are the highest, largest and rockiest mountains in the entire Romanian Carpathians. Six of the peaks are higher than 2.500 meters, and almost 30 peaks are over 2.400 meters. In their big glacial cirques formed during Quaternary Age there are today alpine lakes (around 70), the biggest being Balea and Urlea with surfaces over 50.000 m2.

The vegetation in Fagaras Mountains is very rich: dedidous tree and coniferous tree forests, grasslands (especially in south), alpine flowers like gentian (Lat. Gentiana) or edelweiss. The fauna in this region is: chamoises, deers, bears, martens, capercaillies and others.

Location: Part of the Southern Carpathians, they border in north with Fagaras Depression, in east Piatra Craiului Mountains, in west Parang Mountains, and in south with Cozia, Ghitu and Iezer Mountains.
