The Dacian Fortresses in Orastie Mountains – The Dacian Fortresses, 6 Late Iron Age defensive works, were created in the first centuries BC and AD as protection against Roman conquest. Their extensive and well preserved remaining are located on a spectacular natural site and present a dramatic picture of a vigorous and innovative Iron Age civilization. These fortresses are: Sarmizegetusa – the most important of all, formal capital of the Dacian Union of tribes; Costeşti-Cetăţuie; Costeşti-Blidaru; Luncani-Piatra Roşie, Băniţa and Căpâlna. Since 1999 they were inscribed as World Heritage Monuments by UNESCO.
